Looking for a fun, educational, richly experiential Earth Day adventure? Then make (low-impact) tracks up Sooke on April 22. This family friendly shindig is evolving into an unpretentious, entirely volunteer-run local addition to the thousands of events in 192 countries marking the 48th annual Earth Day.

On the evolving menu: Green vendors, earth-friendly businesses, non-profit groups, Zero Waste Sooke’s first anniversary Sooke Repair Cafe, workshops, speakers, demonstrations, zero-waste food trucks, music and a Save Our Coast Sooke orca sign-making project. An Earth Day community dance in the later afternoon/early evening will feature an upcycled fashion show, awards ceremony and sockhop dance.

Exhibition hours will be from 10 a.m. to mid-afternoon, with the party scheduled between 4:30 and 8 PM. Admission for the day is by donation. Exhibitor tables will be priced at $10-$40 based on size and location.

An affiliated Sooke Region Communities Clean-Up is slated for Sat. April 14 and will involve volunteer work crews stretching from East Sooke to Port Renfrew’s Pacheedaht First Nation. A call has also been issued for entries to an Earth Day poetry competition that will be adjudicated by Wendy Morton, the award-winning Otter Point poet. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded on April 22.

Sincere thanks to our major funder, the District of Sooke, and our first wave of sponsors: the Rotary Club of Sooke,  Wittich Environmental Services, Interactive Construction and Viridian Energy Co-operative.  Also warm appreciation to Phoebe Dunbar for the first of our door-prize donations — a piece of spectacular wood art from her Phoebewood carving shed. Thank you, Phoebe!

Creatively United’s Frances Litman has partnered with Sooke organizers while she puts her festival in hiatus in order to focus on developing the Creatively United.org networking, event and online information hub.
